Antamina Copper Mine

Antamina is a polymetallic mining complex that produces copper, zinc and molybdenum concentrates.

The mine is located in north-central Peru, approximately 100 km east of Huaraz, at an elevation of 4,100 m. The main facilities consist of an open pit copper-zinc mine with rock waste dumps, a processing concentrator, and a tailings impoundment. Associated facilities include a 302 km-long concentrate pipeline and a concentrate dewatering and ship loading facility located at Puerto Punta Lobitos near Huarmey.

The mine will cease primary production in 2019 and the long-term stockpiles will be depleted in 2022.

Soils & Vegetation Monitoring Program

Ecología y Tecnología Ambiental (Ecotec)

The Soil and Vegetation Monitoring Program periodically evaluates the soil and vegetable tissues of related plants, especially those for agricultural use, in order to determine the presence of metals.

The work consisted of simultaneous field sampling of soils, cultivated plants and wild forage tissues. The sampling was performed according to the 02 major drainage basins and dispersal potential and based on its relationship with specific components of the operation. The preparation and preservation of samples was performed according to the best practices of custody chain, refrigeration and transportation. The samples were analyzed by an accredited testing laboratory, following exact analytical and calibration procedures.

The results obtained for soil and plant tissues were tested with reference values established by the program and derivatives of international sources. In the case of soils, for the first time they were compared with national soil quality standards.

The final analysis included a special and temporal approach, including the integration of information generated during the previous monitoring, weather data, air and water quality, among others. The results provided valuable information that indicates not only the state of the soils and associated vegetation, especially in the crops area near to the exploitation area; but they are also useful as an environmental indicator for the mine’s surrounding conditions.

Golder Associates had an ongoing role as the Engineer of Record for the design and construction of the tailings dam which had an ultimate height of over 240 metres. The tailing dam will be one of the highest embankments in the world.

Associated work included a water supply dam, three 3.5-m horseshoe section drill and blast tunnels, three concrete tunnel plugs and two sidehill decant structures, the design of tailings distribution systems, tailings management planning, ongoing geochemical studies, surface water management, and the development of operation, maintenance and surveillance plans and emergency response plans.

Closure plan preparation included assessing works, physical and geochemical stability for the open pit, waste dumps, tailings, low grade and marginal grade stockpile areas. Closure plans were also prepared for the concentrator, mine site and port facilities, pipelines, valve stations and power lines.

Klohn Crippen Berger (KCB) developed a progressive reclamation program as well as environmental management plans following closure. KCB designed and constructed an engineered wetland at 4000 m elevation and sediment and water treatment ponds for runoff from the mine waste rock dumps. Cost estimates and closure schedule were developed for progressive reclamation, closure works, engineering, inspections and permits, as well as long term operations and maintenance.

TDM built a system that acts as an efficient and safe protection for Antamina Primary Crusher against landslides of rocks and other materials.

The solution used Geobrugg Dynamic Barriers, systems that are composed of flexible and rigid elements that have the capacity to absorb an energy of 3000 KJ, caused by the impact of stones or other materials arising from considerable heights.

TDM installed a complete system of Geobrugg RX-150 adapted to the characteristics required.

The project included a service corridor between the Dam D (near the new camp) and the concentrator plant, with a length of 2.4km and a track width of 30m, where small vehicles will travel and pipeline services will be placed (fresh water, mine water, overflow, tailings, high and medium voltage transmission lines and fiber optics).

The design also included 03 platforms that were designed to relocate the existing infrastructure (warehouses, offices, workshops, etc). As part of the engineering development, the transmission lines in high and medium voltage will be carried through a gallery of reinforced concrete on the corridor.

Conceptual, basic and detailed engineering to increase the storage capacity of perforation samples.

Between 2012 and 2016, Antamina is conducting an exploration campaign that will require storage of 120,000m of drilling samples per year. GMI was hired to develop the conceptual, basic and detail Engineering of the 7 and 8 zones, located at the south of the current core shack platform in the Yanacancha camp.

The detailed engineering studies optimized the drainage designs presented in the basic engineering with the development of more economical technical solutions. In addition, an improvement was made on the accuracy of the material take off (MTO) and earthworks quantifications, drainage works, concrete works, metal structures, supply and improved electrical connections.

Earthwork MTO was updated with the survey data of the soil mechanics report, as well as the development of construction plans with the necessary detail to minimize the technical queries and modifications to be made during the work execution.

With all these adjustments it was possible to update the project CAPEX with a level of accuracy of +/-10%.

Detail engineering of seepage pumping line relocation.

Due to the steady expansion of the tailings dam, the seepage pumping system needed a change that covered the required flow rates. To do so, the system was moved out of the future projection of the tunnel decant extension.

The modified system corresponds to the facilities from the seepage pumping station, up to the booster station, and the development of complementary works for the relocation of pipelines and accessories required for a proper future operation.

The modification of the Antamina project EIA by increasing reserves and mine plan optimisation has as main objectives incorporate changes in the mine plan due to the increase of reserves declared in 2008, 745millones metric tons, and facilitate an increase in the rate of ore processing by optimising the production process.

The average rate of ore processing will increase by 25 % from 104,000 to 130,000 tonnes per day (tpd) on average with maximum outputs up to 175,000 tpd. These amendments extend the lifetime of the mine until 2028 .

According to directorial resolution Nº054-2011-MEM/AAM given on February 18th 2011, the Antamina project Modification of Environmental Impact Assessment for increasing reserves and mine plan optimisation was approved by the Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mines meeting the technical requirements by environmental local regulations.

In order to maintain production plant, during the SAG mill shutdown to change its stator, Minera Antamina devised an alternative system that would set a By Pass to the grinding process, deriving flow of SAG mill to feed directly into ball mills.

The Bypass passes through three specific areas, tripper, vibrating equipments and crusher and grinding area. Its realization demanded the execution of civil, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation works. The main equipments set were two vibrating screens, a cone crusher and three conveyor belts.

Conceptual and Detailed Engineering for the construction of the By-Pass to the Main SAG Mill in the Grinding Area. The role of the By-Pass is to Transport, Grind, and Classify the Mineral in such a way that it allows the SAG Mill to stop working without the need to halt the plant operation.

The By-Pass has a Processing Capacity of 4.750 Metric Tons Per Hour and consists of a new Conical Crusher, Three New Conveyor Belts, Three Modified Existing Conveyor Belts, a Dosing Tripper, One Screen for Moist Material and Two Screens for Dry Material. Engineering was developed in a 3D environment using PDMS.
