Orcopampa Gold and Silver Mine

Orcopampa mine is located in the province of Castilla in the state of Arequipa in Peru. With operations approximately 1,350 kilometers southeast of the city of Lima at an altitude of between 3,800 and 4,500 meters above sea level, Orcopampa is one of the top gold producers in Peru.

Orcopampa mining unit comprises the concentration and processing plant along with the tailings deposits located at Orcopampa. Mining operations are located at Chilcaymarca (Chipmo).

The modification of the environmental impact assessment (MEIA) covers the need to include new components required for the mining operation, the same that will be located in Pucara, Mauras, Pucay, Manto, Chipmo, Delta and Calera sectors.

In the sector Chipmo, a plant for treatment effluents as well as a plant for domestic wastewater treatment will be located.

7 smokestacks in Pucara, 3 raise borer in Mauras sector, 1 smokestack in the Pucay sector. Delta area will include the deposit of sterilized material and top soil deposit. Calera sector will contain the area of ​​hazardous waste disposal and landfill. Manto sector will include the effluent treatment plant of Alberto tunnel and the septic system for domestic sewage treatment.

The MEIA covers the following: area of ​​influence of the project, environmental baseline, project components, identification and evaluation of environmental impacts, environmental management plan, socioeconomic baseline community relations plan (PRC), closure plan conceptual, economic valuation of impacts.

According to directorial resolution Nº172-2012-MEM-AAM given on May 29th 2012, the 2nd modification of the closure plan for Orcopampa mining unit comprising 4A and 5 tailing dam deposit as well as capacity increment to 4,000 tpd was approved meeting the technical requirements for the Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mines.

The 1st amendment to the mine closure plan (MCP) aims to reschedule the original MCP schedule of Orcopampa mining unit referring only to activities of progressive closure, mainly due to the need of removal and transportation of tailings deposit contained in No.3 dam to the temporary No.2 dam.

The 1st MCP modification states that the tailings contained in the deposit No.3 shall be transported to dam No.2 for temporary storage considering a 4.5 months at a production rate of 8,000 tpd. Additionally, the tailings temporarily stored on No.2 dam will be transferred to the tailings dam No.4 in compliance with mine closure plan at a rate of 1,500 tpd production within a 22 months plan between September 2011 and July 2013.

According to directorial resolution Nº283-2011-MEM-AAM given on September 09th 2011, the 1st modification of the mining closure plan for Orcopampa mining unit was approved meeting the technical requirements for the Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mines.

In order to increase the capacity of concentrator plant from 1,800 tpd to 4,000 tpd is necessary to increase the storage capacity of tailing dam No. 4 by building 2 new tailings deposits (4A and 5).

The project involves the construction phase, operation and final closure. The EIA contains physical component, biological component, socioeconomic environment, identification and evaluation of environmental impacts, environmental management plan, environmental monitoring plan and conceptual closure plan.

According to directorial resolution Nº018-2011-MEM/AAM given on January 14th 2011, Orcopampa mining unit EIA of 4A and 5 tailing dam deposit as well as plant capacity increment to 4,000 tpd was approved meeting the technical requirements for the Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mines and the environmental local regulations.

The increment of the concentrator plant capacity from 1,200 tpd to 1,800 tpd authorised in April 2007 included the operation of ancillary facilities allowing the cyanidation and flotation circuit to continue operating.

Restarting the flotation circuit brought about metallurgical difficulties needing as a result the installation of additional equipment in the area of ​​the processing plant in order to work at the new capacity of 1,800 tpd. All these activities led to changes in the original environmental management plan of Orcopampa mining unit bringing about the respective preparation of this study.

According to directorial resolution Nº209-2009-MEM/AAM given on December 02nd 2009, the 1st modification of the environmental management plan for Orcopampa mining unit was approved meeting the technical requirements for the Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mines.
